Zambeel Dramatic Readings presents Sookhay Saavun

Saturday, 28th January 2017 | 7:30PM – 8:30PM

Zamiruddin Ahmed’s (1928-1990) nuanced works are distinct for their unassuming and direct narrative style. Mostly woven around the Muslim culture in India, his compelling works draw upon themes of social relationships, deception, loss of innocence, domestic estrangement and the suppressed sexuality of middle class women. The title of this performance borrows its name from the author’s short story Sookhay Saavun, which is considered a masterpiece of Urdu Literature.

Women are central to the narratives in both the selected stories Qissa Musammaat Phool Vati Ka and Tishna e Faryaad. Mercilessly manipulated by the male protagonists, the women choose their own fate through despair and dejection, claiming autonomy over their individual destinies.
