One Response so far…
Saad is an old fiend. I wish he had focused less on Sabeen’s personal history, and more on the challenges and rewards of building a community in Karachi.
For example, why would membership be “anathema to our ethos?” For the general public, I see two models.
1. Consumer. Here we are now, entertain us. Take our money, sell us coffee, send us home.
2. Member. We are ready to make a small investment of time and money to make a commitment to the principles of this organization.
I would throw in a small amount of mandatory work as part of the membership requirements, even if you don’t need it. Say, an hour a month. Come mop the floor, clean out the coffee machine, even if they are clean. It will make you bond with the org and with civic society.
