Join us at T2F for the launch of the novel, Breath of Death, followed by a conversation with the author, Saad Shafqat. The session will be moderated by Kulsoom Ghias.
What is causing a mysterious brain illness in Karachi, Pakistan’s teeming and unruly commercial capital?
This is the question posed – and answered to chilling effect – in the fiction thriller Breath of Death by Saad Shafqat, who describes himself as a neurologist by profession and a writer by inclination. The story begins in the wards of Avicenna University Hospital and picks up pace as it touches upon some of the difficult themes in which our society is currently embroiled. An intrepid neurologist and a bright young medical student find themselves ensnared in this vortex, as the action leaps from page to page towards an uncertain and potentially terrifying climax.
“Original and intriguing, it had me gripped throughout.” – Mohammed Hanif, author of A Case of Exploding Mangoes
“Breath of Death features taut, intelligent writing, and enough twists, turns, and atmosphere to satisfy the most jaded thriller connoisseur.” – Shandana Minhas, author of Tunnel Vision
“Intense, with a racy plot and compelling suspense.” – The Sunday Tribune (India)
About the Author
Saad Shafqat was born and educated in Karachi, attending Habib Public School, DJ College, and Aga Khan University, before obtaining a PhD in neuroscience from Duke University and specializing as a neurologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. At present, he is Professor and Head of Neurology at Aga Khan University Hospital (which provides much of the background for the novel’s fictional setting). Saad also writes for the cricket website ESPNcricinfo, and has co-authored Javed Miandad’s autobiography, Cutting Edge (Oxford, 2003). This is his first work of fiction.
