Chapter 8: Jaanvar Bhi Insaan Hein

Climate change, overpopulation and over-consumption of the Earth’s natural resources affect not just human beings but the animal kingdom also. On an average 137 species of animals are going extinct every day due to deforestation – a staggering figure when one considers that these are species that have evolved over millennia to survive! If we like to imagine ourselves being ‘the pinnacle of creation’, then it is high time we accept our responsibility towards Mother Earth and all other species that populate her. Join the next session of the Maa Dharti Project with three eminent speakers that have a very special relationship with the Earth and the animal kingdom!

Tofiq Pasha Mooraj – the spearhead and mentor of the Maa Dharti Project has 30 years of experience in horticulture, floriculture, landscaping, tree-plantation, food development, water management and irrigation. Philosophy Circle: The Art of Argumentation

Philosophy Circle presents
Session 2: The Art of Argumentation

Most of us use the words, ‘logic’, ‘reason’, ‘rationality’ quite often in our lives. But what does it really mean to be logical, or to have a valid or sound argument? Why is a thing ‘reasonable’? Thinkers have thought about this question for centuries, and yet we somehow assume that we intuitively have their answers. In this session we will explore argumentation as it is done in philosophy, and learn what thinking clearly and non-fallaciously about something means.
In a world where we are constantly told what to think and how to live by structures that dehumanize us, philosophy can be a remarkably effective tool in becoming a good, reasonable human being. It can also teach us to sharpen thinking skills in general, which can be employed in all areas of life. This program is an invitation to the philosophically uninitiated and the philosophically versed, to learn about the basics of this vast subject and engage in asking some of the most central questions that are relevant to human life.

About the speaker:
Umair Khan is a philosopher with an MA in philosophy from the University of Sheffield and currently preparing to start his PhD. His interest areas range from the nature of the self, perception, emotions, and consciousness as a whole. His research includes using scientific experimental data to evaluate philosophical claims about the mind and body, requiring him to be in constant dialogue with cognitive neuroscience and neurobiological research. He also takes a keen interest in philosophy of gender and language.

Date: Wednesday, 29th August
