About:
Ustad Khurshid Hussain
One of the few doyens of tabla that remain in Pakistan today, Ustad Khurshid Hussain hails from a family of musicians. His father, Mehboob Hussain, was a sarangi player and entrusted his friend, the great Ustad Habib Khan (also known as Baba Bibia Khan) to teach his son the art of tabla playing. Although Ustad Khurshid Hussain’s blood line is from the Ajrada Gharana, he learned tabla primarily from Ustad Habib Khan who was well versed with all the gharanas’ styles and compositions. Khurshid Saheb has been an employee of Radio Pakistan and has performed live with some of the greatest musicians that Pakistan has witnessed including Ustad Kabir Khan, Ustad Sharif Khan Poonchwaley, Ustad Ghulab Khan, Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, Ustad Rais Khan, Mehdi Hassan, Iqbal Bano, Farida Khanum, and Sajid Hussain. He is also the accompanist of choice for visiting artistes from India.

Ustad Sajid Hussain
Hailing from a family of musical virtuosos, Sajid Hussain, is the disciple of his father, Ustad Fida Hussain, and his uncle, Ustad Kabir Khan. Belonging to the Senia Gharana that traces its roots to Mian Tansen, Sajid Hussain began to play the sitar at the age of 16. He has performed for radio, television and music festivals such as the All Pakistan Music Conference. Sajid Hussain is one of the senior artistes and composers in the new ensemble, Tarz Group which comprises of classically trained musicians who present South Asian musical heritage in a new orchestral style. In addition to performances, Sajid Hussain has focused his attention on educating his children in the art that is his ancestral inheritance. He is one of the few remaining sitar maestros of Pakistan and his artistry lies not only in his playing but also in his magnificent compositions.

Ustad Mehmood Ali Khan
Ustad Mehmood Ali Khan is the son of Ustad Qudratullah Khan and the brother of the late Ustad Zafar Ali Khan. He belongs to the Gwalior Gharana of music, a tradition that traces its roots back to Mian Tansen, a legendary musical maestro in the court of the Mughal Emperor, Akbar. With great agility and immense creativity, Mehmood Ali Khan’s vocal renditions are an evidence of a tradition in good hands.

Shehroze Hussain
Shehroze Hussain is the eldest son of sitar maestro Ustad Sajid Hussain of the Senia Gharana. Shehroze started learning sitar at the very early age of six and has performed at a range of private and public venues such as Sampurna, All Pakistan Music Conference, and Lahore Music Forum. For the last three years he has been a star performer, alongside his father, in the classical ensemble, Tarz Group, led by Yousuf Kerai. Possessing an excellent grip on the sitar and achieving great technical agility with his voice, Shehroze brings a refreshing personality to the tradition of sitar players.

Zohaib Hassan
Born into a family of musicians hailing from the Amritsar gharana, Zohaib has established himself among the leading sarangi players in Pakistan. The members of his illustrious family include Ustad Hussain Bukhsh Amritsari, Ustad Nathu Khan, Ustad Peeru Khan and Ustad Abdul Hameed Khan. Zohaib’s initial training came under his family elders, and later he became a disciple of Ustad Ghulam Haider Khan of the Qasur gharana. Zohaib is keeping alive his family’s nearly extinct style of sarangi playing that incorporates all four fingers, giving his playing a greater speed, fluidity, and variety of note combinations. Zohaib has performed in Pakistan, UK, Italy, and India, and is presently striving hard to create a presence on the International platform.

Yousuf Kerai
Yousuf Kerai learned to sing and play the harmonium under the tutelage of the late Master Babu Khan. At the age of sixteen, he was accepted as a student of Ustad Khurshid Hussain and has been a student of tabla for over 16 years. Yousuf is the founder of the Tarz Group and is committed to finding innovative ways for our musical heritage to adapt and grow in value so that it can be passed on to future generations as an integral part of our South Asian identity.

Telefilm Screening: Firdaus ki Dozakh

Friday, April 14th, 2017

Wednesday, 19th April 2017 | 7:00PM

From the star-duo Khalid Ahmed and Bee Gul comes a drama of inter-generational conflict that affects the lives of two women in contemporary day Pakistan. The news of young Amina’s rape is hushed by her family in the name of honor and remains repressed in history. Years later, a similar trauma in her daughter’s life sets in motion an endless cycle of desperate overtures which remind Amna of her own tragedy. Linked by a common thread of yearning and fear, the lives of Amna and Firdaus, desperate for the recognition of their own suffering, intertwine one night, and amidst heated debate, come together in a brutal moment of blame, guilt, and recrimination.
Firdaus ki Dozakh is a subtle study of how Pakistan’s woefully ossified patriarchal setup continues to sacrifice women on the altar of familial honor.

Starring: Nimra Bucha, Khalid Ahmed, Sana Askari

Directed by: Khalid Ahmad
